Driver tails Izzy’s car, forcing him off the coast road and drowning him in the sea. Rose, in a separate incident, also reveals his violent capacities, spearing a fork into the eye of another of Izzy’s men. Driver correctly guesses that it is drug money Driver intercepts one of Izzy’s henchmen tailing Irene to her shock, he violently attacks him. After being chased by unidentified pursuers, Driver gets away with the bag containing a large amount of cash. The raid goes wrong and Standard is killed. Driver’s casual meetings with his neighbour Irene and her young son lead to a growing attachment to the pair and a motive for helping when Irene’s husband Standard, newly released from jail, is forced to take part in a raid on a pawnshop. Shannon has ambitions to set up a stock-car racing team utilising Driver’s skills he negotiates for a sizeable loan from financier Rose, at the pizzeria run by Nino (real name Izzy), who is later revealed as a bitter and volatile would-be mafioso. He takes a phlegmatic approach to the two moonlighting jobs usually arranged for him by Shannon – doing stunts for movies and as a getaway driver for local robbers. Driver is a mechanic at a stock-car garage owned by his friend Shannon. Like watching rats fight in a gorgeously lit bucket, this is compellingly nasty, but for those with the stomach for it, Drive is a lot of fun.Plot: Los Angeles, the present.
Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman are on fine form as the terrifying heavies, but it's Gosling who anchors the movie with a strong, silent (and undeniably pretty) performance that's oddly reminiscent, as is the set-up, of the 1953 Alan Ladd western Shane.
Refn (best known for the Pusher series of films) drenches the movie in a kind of kitsch 1980s style, punctuating the glittering night-time skyscraper shots and synth pop soundtrack with staccato jolts of extreme violence. When married neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan in an underwritten role) and her little boy are menaced by gangsters, he acts to protect them, which leads to bloody warfare with the local criminal fraternity. Ryan Gosling convinces as a nameless stunt performer who uses his skills to moonlight as a getaway driver in this stylish revenge drama from Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn.
